You’ll Never Get Bored in New Braunfels!

July 16, 2021

New Braunfels is known for its German heritage, its river floating fun, and its status as a waterpark destination. As since we’re just a hop, skip, and a jump from both Austin and San Antonio, you will never tire of things to do and see while in New Braunfels.

Water Fun

The refreshing cool waters of Guadalupe River and Comal River draw many kayakers, swimmers, and tubers during the spring and summer months. It is a great way to cool down from the hot Texan summer. There are several places around town to rent water equipment, or bring your own.

And then there’s Schlitterbahn! This popular waterpark has drawn water lovers young and old for decades. Choose from the lazy river, several giant water slides, regular swimming, a beach area, and heated pools for the cooler months. Schlitterbahn is a year-round, full-service resort that will keep you entertained for days.

Shopping in New Braunfels

The Historic District of Gruene has some of the best shopping in town. Browsing the independent and antique shops will have you busy for hours. Make sure you have your best walking shoes on, as you will spend a lot of time on your feet exploring everything.

Downtown New Braunfels

If you are into boutique and antique shopping, the downtown area is for you! It is a popular area with tourists, but manages to keep its unique small-town charm, and the shops are run by home town folks. You won’t see any big box stores here! Texas’ oldest bakery is located here, Naegelin’s, and Henne, the state’s oldest hardware store.

Restaurants in New Braunfels

Downtown and historic Gruene also has great places to dine for all three meals of the day. Gristmill Restaurant and Bar has great outdoor river view seating. For live music and great food, Krause’s Biergarten and Café is a must-do. Both the downtown and Gruene districts are full of great cafes, bars and eateries.

The New Braunfels Farmer’s Market is the place to come every Saturday for not only the freshest produce, but pizza, chocolate, baked goods, meats, and cheeses. Handmade household products are also on offer.

Things to Do in New Braunfels at Night

A great vintage thing to do is to take in a move at the old drive-in theatre; one of just a handful that are left in existence! The Stars and Stripes Drive-In Theatre plays modern movies, and the entire place, including the café, is decked out in 1950s style.

Outdoor Adventures

On the outskirts of town towards San Antonio is the Natural Bridge Caverns. It is the most significant cave in the state of Texas, and is one of the world’s best caverns for exploring. Tours are held often, and you can also zip line, and go fossil and gem hunting here.

Back in New Braunfels, head to the urban oasis that is Landa Park. Situated on 51 acres along the river, there is a large swimming pool, a beautiful picnic area shaded by ancient oaks, and a miniature train that criss-crosses the park. Take a paddle boat ride on the river, enjoy 18-hole mini golf, tennis courts, and two scenic hiking trails.
